Assignment: Computer as Tool, Tutor and Tutee

What is computer? Well, in simple words computer is a thing that can generate its own programs to help humans in making their works way easier and flexible. Who was the first one invented a computer? There are a lot of opinions about this matter. Some said Alan Turing and some said Koran Zuse who first invented computer in 1930s. According to TIME magazine, Turing is the guy who, in the 1930s, laid the groundwork for computational science, while Zuse, around the same time, created something called the “Z1,” generally credited as “the first freely programmable computer.” Basically, a computer has its role as tool, tutor and tutee.

First and foremost, computer as a tool means the programs that are available on a computer. These variety of programs help people to do anything that they want. Among the software that regularly used by people are, Word Processor, graphic tools, presentation software, computer database and spreadsheet software. Using the computer in a guided yet independent way has helped many people.  For example youths maybe like to use graphic tools such as Photoshop program that has many features to edit any pictures that they like meanwhile the adults would use Word Processor such as Microsoft Word to do their assignments, reports etc. This role of computer makes learning new things can be more fun and enjoyable.

Secondly, computer as a tutor means that the computer gives instructions to students to do something and replace the role of a teacher as well. Computer as tutor also is identified as Computer-based Instruction), (Computer-assisted Instruction) and (Computer-assisted Learning).  There are a few features in the role of computer as a tutor such as drill-and-practice, tutorial, simulation, educational games, problem solving and applications. Last but no least is about computer as a tutee. It means that the users (teachers or students) exchange the roles between computers. For instance, the users ‘teach’ the computer to complete task. In my understanding, a person who creates something using computer such as Mark Zuckherberg who creates Facebook using computer has proved that the role of computer as a tutee is successful in helping one to achieve certain things or works.

In conclusion, it is not denied that computers have helped us a lot until today. In my opinion, I agree that computers have bad and good effects towards people. Despite all of that, we have to admit that without computers, it must be hard for teachers, students, doctors, engineers, directors etc to survive in this world of globalization today. Computers also enable us to save our time when doing our works, and encourage all of us to learn without boundaries. With computers, we can travel, learn, and explore almost anything that we want.

1.0 Introduction to LMS and CMS

In higher education, the uses of internet in education has become wider and it is related to

educational technology. Educational technology has been considered as the main key to human progress. It helps the student to learn easier and faster. Educational technology is used by learners and educators in homes, schools, businesses, and others. E-learning is closely related to educational technology which refers to the use of modern technology, such as computers, digital technology, networked digital devices and associated software and courseware with learning scenarios, worksheets and interactive exercises that facilitate learning. Learning Management System and Course Management System are the proves that the technology in education had developed. LMS is suitable for workplace learning environment, while CMS is an online systems that were originally designed to support classroom learning in academic settings, such as universities and high schools. These systems seem have the same function,so it is understandable why confusion might exist about the differences between the two types of systems.

1.1    A learning management system (LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of e-learning education courses or training programs. LMS products and software allows universities and organizations to develop intelligent electronic coursework as well as deliver it with unmatched reach and flexibility. Apart from that,  LMS offers an incredible balance between functionality and ease-of-use to its users. For example, colleges and universities will use LMS to convey online courses and augment on-campus courses. Another example is corporate training departments will use LMS to deliver online training as well as to automate record-keeping and employee registration.  LMS has a lot services to be offered. Among of them are Course Content Delivery, Student Registration and Administration, Skill Gap Analysis, Reporting, Courseware Authoring and etc. Other than that, a few examples of components that have in LMS are like uploading and management of documents containing curricular content, the creation and publication of course calendars and the interaction between students, such as instant messaging, email, and discussion forums.

1.2   A course management system (CMS) is a collection of software tools providing an online environment for course interactions. It is also a tool that allows an instructor to post information on the web without that instructor having to know or understand HTML or other computer languages. It provides an instructor with a set of tools and a framework that allows the relatively easy creation of online course content and the subsequently teaching management of that course including various interactions with the students that taking the course. A course management system (CMS) is very important to higher education because  it plays an important roles to the teaching and learning process. A CMS may contain aspect of administrations which are the class rosters, the marks and grades and it also contain the aspect of teaching such as online exercises, quizzes and also tests. We also can use a course management system to communicate with others that also taking the course for the learning process. For example that we can see is the iFolio system. This system seems to use course management system (CMS) to complete the learning and teaching process of the lecturers and the students in The National University of Malaysia. So I think CMS would be the best platform for those who want to have an online environment for course interactions.

2.0 Comparison between LMS and CMS

2.1  Learning Management System (LMS) and Course Management System (CMS) may seem to be the same thing, but there are slight differences between the two. In terms of definitions, LMS is a software application or web-based technology used to plan, implement and assess a specific learning process. In other words, it is an online program or application whereby e-learning is delivered, students’ information and performances are recorded, documented, and can be tracked by the administrators. Examples of LMS include Claroline, Moodle, Sakai and many more. While LMS focuses on a larger scope, CMS is narrower in scope as it covers more on the management and distribution aspects of the courses. To put it simply, CMS is a collection of software tools where instructors upload course materials, tasks and assignments whereby students can assess and submit their work online. It is very commonly used in universities and high schools. A clear example of CMS is i-Folio which is the main system used by students of The National University of Malaysia for said purposes.

2.2  LMS and CMS have notably different functions. LMS primarily acts as an electronic registrar by electronically performing various enrollment and tasks. One of LMS’s main function is to register students and their respective courses besides providing lists of courses available in an institution. Students are informed and confirmed whether they manage to enroll themselves in the course or not and even check their schedules through the system. It also provides information on the number of people enrolled in every courses. Compared to LMS, a CMS is usually not used to register online courses but placing course materials online. Quizzes, tutorial questions and announcements are posted as well. Of course, these are done by the instructors. Through CMS, instructors can also tracks students’ performances in each courses besides posting their test grades.

2.3    LMS is designed for workplace environments. Apart from course registrations, through this system, users can access activities and hold discussions with participants which are either students or instructors and be continuously well-informed of their final exam results. Additionally, this system can be used to process charges for courses, for example, registration and tuition fees. On the other hand, CMS is designed to aid academic classroom courses. Despite having record keeping features, CMSs do not provide payment for courses and course enrollment and although it’s true that CMS provide test grades, they do not provide final exam results.

3.0 Conclusion

Technology has really improved our lives, which trumps any dependency, because the benefits are priceless. Today everything is possible just because of technology. Today we are modern generation and we know more about technology. If technology did not exist, today in our houses, there would be no computers, telephones or mobile phones. By using LMS and CMS it is easy for users to access almost everything on websites and allow them to explore the contents whenever they want. Learning materials that are included in LMS and CMS can be used for long distance learning and are accessible to a wider audience. LMS increases the productivity and product output as it improves the efficiency among the workers. This is true because any information can be processed at a faster rate by the workers. Workers depend on LMS to keep their work right and safe. Meanwhile, LMS plays a big role in guiding the students across the world. This is because today, it is necessary for students to access and use LMS in their studies. For example, they have to upload their assignments online and discuss tasks with lecturers. Therefore, it is undeniable that technology like LMS and CMS have helped many people in managing their works systematically.
